The Real Cost of College

Actually, college is less expensive than most people believe. In fact, it is far less expensive. Here is proof, drawn from a scientific poll conducted by the sociology department of a large Midwestern university.

In a survey a few years ago, it was discovered that people frequently overestimate the cost of college by between $10,000 and $20,000 a year. In some instances, they were even more inaccurate than that.

Although the group surveyed was well aware that costs at public colleges and universities are substantially less than those at privates, they badly overestimated fees at both. Similarly, their estimates of the cost of online degree programs were well above the actual costs.

Why are people so inadequately informed about college costs? Perhaps the colleges themselves are partially responsible for not getting their real costs out to the public. The media, however, also bare responsibility for focusing on the costs of institutions like Yale, Harvard, etc. while ignoring the far less modest costs of the majority of institutions.

Some families do have a good understanding of actual college costs but little or no understanding of the fact that there are funds available to greatly reduce their actual expenditures.

As you investigate higher education for yourself or a family member, get the facts for yourself. Do not believe everything you hear about the cost of higher education or the availability of financial aid as there is a good deal of misinformation out there.

Whatever you do, do not assume that college is out of reach for you. There is a lot of financial aid available to students who need it and many college admissions and financial aid counselors willing to guide them through the financial aid process.

Many students are attending universities and other trade schools in this economy and need a way to help finance their studies. There are several scholarships available if you meet many different criteria.

However, the amounts of these scholarships range from the hundreds to thousands of dollars.

The best way to increase your chance of being awarded scholarships is to apply for as many as you can that you are qualified for. Many students literally apply for hundreds of scholarships online since it is so easy and then they are lucky if they are awarded a few.

There are so many scholarships that just sit there and are not ever used because no qualified students even apply. This was especially true before the internet. Nowadays you can fill out applications all day long online in just a few minutes. This might increase your chances of being awarded some educational assistance funding to help pay for your schooling.

Financial Aid Is Needed By Many Americans

More money is being dispersed by the US government than ever before via the stimulus package. It will be debated for decades probably whether this is a good or bad thing and whether it ultimately worked. However, at this time only one thing is clear: people want to know how to get their hands on some of this stimulus money.

People think they might be able to benefit by getting a grant from Obama and the stimulus bill. They are looking into the grant process more than ever before and trying to understand it. They are also trying to get loans or anything else that might have come out of the bill that might help them financially.

Grants from the government are free and don’t have to be repaid whereas a loan would. Most grants though, are aimed at businesses and different state and local projects for rebuilding infrastructure and other things. As grants are free, this naturally means that there is a lot of competition for them. It also means that very few people are going to be able to qualify for one and get one.

One thing that some are trying to find are student loans and back to school grants. President Obama might have mentioned something about moms going back to school and that has sent moms all over the country to their computers trying to find out more. He has also put through a new bill where all student loans would be dispersed by the government instead of through private companies, as is the norm now. This bill is due to be voted on next year and will undoubtedly have some opposition.

A tremendous amount of money has been given away and right now it is impossible to tell if it is working. Unemployment is still high and jobs are still difficult to find so many wonder if our tax dollars are being wasted. Nothing has changed in our political system as the liberals love what is happening with the distribution of wealth and the conservatives hate it.
